I am telling this story now so that I don’t have to repeat myself when I am seen wearing an eye patch. A hummingbird did it – flew right into my eye causing complete blindness. They look so harmless and until this point in life I thought they only came in one type; specifically the ruby throated hummingbird. It turns out that there are over 100 different types of hummingbirds and unlike the Canadian Ruby throated mini birds, which have a distinct ability to avoid spectators, most of these birds take some sort of sick pleasure out of playing chicken with you.
The Bellavista Cloud Forest Lodge is home to approximately 25 feeders that attract no less than 150 hummingbirds at any point in time. While this is pretty and entertaining to watch – it is a nightmare to try and get from our room to the restaurant without suffering some sort of injury. Guests can be seen weaving and bopping along the trail while teeny birds with wings flapping 50 time a second zing around their heads – like a page out of a Hitchcock Novel.
So I am writing this pre-emptively to let you all know about vision loss I anticipate soon suffering – while I can still see well enough to type.
(UPDATE...I made it out of the Cloud Forest with eyeballs intact)
I hope your eye heals quickly! Hummingbirds are so lovely - you got some great photos!
